Frederick Holmes School is a very special, ‘special school’. We are an all age [2-19 years] community school for pupils who have severe physical disabilities. We are situated in Hull, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, UK. Pupils and students come to us from throughout the Humber region.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Bickerton, our Webmaster. He has produced a fantastic website for us which reflects our learning and teaching community.

We hope you find the website informative and easy to use. We would welcome any comments or opinions you have about it. Please direct those to Mike whose contact details are displayed on the site.

We are sure you will find the site provides opportunity for enjoyment, information and communication for our pupils and students, Parents and Carers, Staff and Governors and others who may want to find out more about our learning community.

Thank you very much.

Here is a more detailed description of our school:

FREDERICK HOLMES SCHOOL

Frederick Holmes School (FHS) is an all age special school for pupils and young people with severe physical disabilities. The school is part of the Hull City Council Children and Young Peoples Services. All pupils attend on a daily basis, during school term times; there are no residential facilities.

The school takes pupils from all over the former region of Humberside, now North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. At the present time there are 92 pupils and young people attending the school, ranging in age from 2 to 19 years of age.

Although FHS is a school primarily for pupils with severe physical disabilities, many of our pupils also experience additional learning difficulties and/or communication difficulties. Most of our pupils require a high degree of adult support to access everyday activities and the school curriculum.

A number of our pupils are experiencing very complex and severe difficulties and are totally dependent on adult support for all of their daily and educational needs.

The school works with a multidisciplinary team, including speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, all based (to a lesser or greater degree) at school. We also have nursing support to care for pupils who have a medical need.

Other support services visit the school and individual pupils as needed e.g. the regional wheelchair services, educational psychologists, Connexions staff, Social Workers, etc. In addition regular clinics are held at school, which enables a number of pupils to be seen by individual paediatric consultants with the minimum of inconvenience and absence.

The school has close links with a number of local schools and colleges through which we are able to access a variety of courses and specialist resources that otherwise would not be available to us. This is of particular significance to the pupils in the Senior School and to the students in the College Unit.

FHS also has links with many mainstream schools throughout the region via the work of the Education Service for Physical Disability (ESPD), based at FHS. The role of the team is to provide quality inclusion opportunities for pupils with physical disabilities in mainstream educational establishments. The ESPD team has some 1400 pupils on its data-base. The ESPD team is also involved in the inclusion into mainstream of any FHS pupil who is moving to their local school. A main aim of FHS is to include pupils into their local mainstream school when it is appropriate to do so.

All pupils at FHS have access to the National Curriculum and an important role of all staff is to facilitate this. We strive to create a lively and stimulating teaching environment for all pupils and staff. The aims of the school are very similar to any other successful educational establishment. We want to ensure that all our pupils have every opportunity to develop to their maximum potential. We endeavour to encourage autonomy and independence in all areas of the pupils’ daily lives. We believe in equal opportunities and we hope that the ethos of our school reflects this. All our work and efforts are based towards of the Every Child matters agenda and also the Hull City Council principle that no child shall be left behind.

“We at Frederick Holmes School
believe that no horizon is so far that we cannot get above or beyond it”
